Taxis

A military unit, roughly equivalent to a battalion (nominal strength: 12 officers, 500 other ranks, 1 elephant). The smallest unit of independent manœuvre, a taxis nominally consists of five lokhoi, a lokhagos (commander), and a hypolokagos (deputy commander), plus its own commissariat, medical support, etc.

In peacetime, especially in the Decadent Period, taxeis are often maintained considerably under strength. The payroll for a taxis is 622 obols per day, plus obols obols for panoply, plus pay for the commissariat and medical staff, plus bed and board for 513+ men and one elephant.
