Sacred Band of Samariopolis

In the Archaic Period the aotos of Samariopolis. As is not unknown with other aotoi, the Sacred Band consists of pairs of homosexual lovers, who are quartered together and sworn to defend one another to the death. The Sacred Band uses coca to induce ferocity in battle, and to make themselves heedless of pain and fatigue. Throughout the Archaic Period the Sacred Band is the most renowned force in the archipelago. Before the Classical Period the Sacred Band, makhetes rather than hoplites, had succumbed to superior drill and discipline. Their tradition, in the form of their imitators in Thekla, survived in the Imperial Guard of later periods. See sexual mores.
