Literacy

Except among the wealthy classes and merchant families, literacy is a rare accomplishment, though in the Archaic Period some democratic cities took steps to extend it to all citizens.

Literate slaves are quite expensive, and secretaries must be hired from prosperous backgrounds.

In total, about 30% of Gehennese adults can read.
