League

In the Archaic Period, a formal league of sovereign states, perhaps including a combination of monarchies oligarchies, and democracies, established by a multilateral treaty. Leagues are usually formed for mutual defence, to co-ordinate efforts against pirates, to guarantee access to a sanctuary, or to encourage trade. They are often celebrated regularly by amphiktionic games, which are open to all citizens of member states. Leagues are often contrasted with hegemonies on the proposition that all members of an league are equal, but in reality many leagues have [[[hegemon]]s in all but name.
