A curved, single-edged sword, sharpened on the inside of the curve, and with a grip designed for one-handed use, like an overgrown kukri. Size is variable, but the favoured length is 50-60 cm. The kopis is suitable only for a hacking stroke, clumsy but powerful. It can also be used as a machete (for clearing brush and cutting wood), or as a sickle, and tends to be favoured by such peltasts as can afford one rather than the more usual hatchet, as a sidearm for archers, and by other irregular troops. Hoplites tend to prefer the xifos.
