Hypotaxiarkh

A military officer assisting a taxiarkh in the command of a taxis, commanding when his superior is off duty, and succeeding to the command when his superior is incapacitated.

A battalion lieutenant ought to be an experienced officer, but his appointment is at the discretion of his superior, and is often made out of considerations of patronage. The pay of a battalion lieutenant is five obols per day, plus possible pay for panoply.
