The memories of eminent people persist in the World of Dreams after their deaths. When these shades receive veneration they are called ‘heroes’. The cults of heroes are usually pretty minor, and are conducted more to revere the memories of the worthy dead, and to provide paragons for those who follow, than to gain the very material benefits offered by the daimons. Heroes can provide self-reinforcing templates for personal development, as the oneiroi do, but, unless the hero was an avatar of an oneiros, avatars of the hero do not gain supernatural powers.
