A small axe having a usually jade or flint head and a short wooden handle, designed for use in one hand. Hatchets are very common tools, and are also carried by some hoplites and peltasts as a secondary weapon for close-in fighting, being favoured over maces because they are better at penetrating armour and can be thrown effectively.
