Ephebe

A boy of citizen family between the ages of eighteen and twenty undergoing training for his forthcoming military career (see Four Lives). Ephebes learn archery, drill and evolutions appropriate to the formations they will fight in, usually in the form of a stylised ‘form’ or dance, to use their weapons (again in stylised movements), and a bit of the current military doctrine. They also undergo a good deal of physical training under military coaches. If they can afford the leisure, ephebes study the liberal arts concurrently. See education, gymnastics, and scholastics.
