Crossbow
Invented in the Archaic Period, improved by Lykomorphus, and, despite its low rate of fire, used in the Classical Period and the Decadent Period by city militias because it is easy to use and very effective for defending fortifications. Rural populations, the upper classes, and professional soldiers prefer the more traditional long bow. See weapons.
