Alcohol is the most popular drug in Gehennum, most adults taking some every day. Many households make their own, but it is also made and sold commercially by taverns.

In the Classical Period and the Decadent Period, good wine and beer are made by brewing concerns and widely shipped and traded. Like fish sauce, wine and beer are shipped and stored in amphorai.

Distillation is practised by alchemists in the Classical Period, but the manufacture of spirits of beer and spirits of wine for drinking is not commercial until the Decadent Period.

Addiction to alcohol is a social problem because of the incapacity of alcoholics to manage their affairs well, and the association between drunkenness and acts of violence, and between alcoholism, wife-beating, and child abuse, but alcohol is not illegal.
